Centre News Art at the Centre

From 25 August to 30 November 2008 UIMC will exhibit the works of 4 artists in the lounge and corridors of the centre.

Lounge (ground floor)
Paintings/collage works and drawings by Frances Alpern:

The collage technique created by Frances permits her to use her own pencil drawings and designs, and also to profit from her unique collection of handmade papers, mostly from Japan. After layering copies of her drawings onto a surface of thick paper, cardboard, and wood, Frances puts on more layers of colored (transparent) Japanese papers and then adjusts the colors with gouache and acrylics before adding coats of different varnishes to achieve a surface of textures that can be viewed from different angles. This technique was inspired by a trip to Japan, where she found the colored papers.

Images of Africa, Etruscan works and botanical sketches are displayed. Most of Frances’s frames are secondhand, the gifts of a retired French picture framer. She restored them herself. Frances Alpern is a native of Virginia, USA and has an art degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and Rhode Island School of Design. She has been living in Villefranche-sur-Mer since 1977.

Metal sculptures by Jean-Claude Pastorino

A real native artist from Nice area (a ‘Niçois’) who collects and reuses old spare parts of cars.

Once recycled, Gérard Pastorino puts together these parts to make a unique piece. His figurative work represent either an animal, a personnage or an object.  He is a self-taught artist who developed his talent of magician with metal pieces.

Abstract paintings and collages by Jean Da Milano and Thomas Casteu
These two ‘artists of UIMC’ have exhibited their works at the centre respectively in 1992, 1995 and 1999

Another artist from Nice who belongs to group of artists of the 1950’s School of Nice.

Lines and structures are the main components of his work. Jean Da Milano incorporates the technique of collage into his work with creased paper on canvas or wood. The excellent harmony of colors makes a beautiful combination of his abstract work.

This artist has collected a large number of national and international prizes.

Also from Nice, two large pieces of the abstract work by Thomas Casteu are also exhibited in the corridors on the first floor.
